MY 2021 BULB ORDER
We inherited a few daffodils in our front garden when we moved into this house and they add such a nice pop of color after a dreary winter. Last year in 2020 I wanted to amp up the bulb count in our yard, and you can see the result of that in this post. For 2021 (more like 2022), we’re going even bigger. Below are the bulbs I’ve ordered for this fall for a really fun spring show in our garden.
One quick note - last year I ordered from Dutch Grown and I had great success with everything I received. Would recommend! This year I’m trying out Colorblends just for something new to do. All the bulb pictures below are from the Colorblends website.
Thalia Daffodils - So, I actually don’t love the look of daffodils, even though (as you’ll see) I bought hundreds of them this year. But the Thalia daffs don’t look like daffodils so they’re kinda perfect, eh? They have a Snowflake-like quality to them, which I like, and are just a bit different. I’m going to plant 25 of these in the front garden beds where there are no bulbs. Spring color isn’t a problem in that spot but a nice pop of white here or there couldn’t hurt.
Pink Charm Daffodils - These caught my eye because they look like my favorite daffodils, the British Gamble, which I got from Dutch Grown this last year but Colorblends doesn’t offer that variety. I’m going to use 25 of these to fill in some of the new garden beds in the backyard alongside the patio.
Falconet Daffodils - You guys. I can’t even wait to show you these next spring if my idea works out. I bought 100 of them :O Just call me Laura from Garden Answer! The grand plan: we have a short wall at the back of our backyard which breaks up our yard from the woods behind it. The area immediately behind the wall is covered in an evergreen myrtle that is super nice. Luckily for us, someone years ago planted one little daffodil. It pops up each year and it’s just like a little patch of sunshine. So… I’m going to turn that into 100 patches of sunshine. (!!!!) Here’s the area I’m talking about:
If you squint your eyes and tilt your head you can actually see the small yellow daffodil blooms immediately to the left of the tree trunk in my drawn circle, but photos never do anything justice. It’s going to be decked out and I’m so excited. Also, I have no special affinity to this Falconet variety but it had two things going for it: the yellow will pop and make a statement from across the yard, and it was the least expensive daffodil bulb they offered in bulk. We love a good deal around here.
Snowflakes - I added these to my garden last fall and they were stunners in the spring. They were the longest-lasting bulbs we had (about a month of bloom time) and were just simple and delicate. The deer didn’t touch ‘em (or if they did, they rebounded nicely) and so I’m adding 25 more!
Spring Loaded Daffodil Mix - I also have a grand plan and bought 100 of these. We have an area in our front garden bed that I’ve added lots of plants to in the last few years, but things don’t really fill in until late spring/early summer. Then, a big tree shades most of the area for the remainder of the summer so annuals don’t do well there. The deer also like to munch on the hostas I have already in the space. I was kind of at a loss for what to do. So, I’m going to nix any summer annual plans and just load it up with spring daffodil color. The Colorbends website gives you a nice little timeline to show when things will be in bloom and this mix should give us color for multiple weeks.
That’s it! Wish me luck planting 200+ bulbs in October. I’ll be sure to update you all in the spring with what should be quite the show.
