VEGGIE GARDEN REFRESH AND FIRST PLANTINGS

It’s that time of year again - time to wake up the vegetable garden! I love that this garden chore can be tackled early on in the season. This vegetable garden space was new last year and, as expected, the soil settled over the last season. So, a fill-up was necessary. I used one bag of Espoma’s Land and Sea Compost and one bag of Espoma’s Raised Bed Mix to top up the beds.

Next up was some general cleanup of the area. I pulled out spent annuals from last year, weeded the pathway, and reset some of the rocks that moved around. I hand pulled all the weeds and for some of the vining weeds that are prevalent in this area of my yard, I pulled and lightly sprayed with Bonide’s Dead Weed Brew to hopefully help get rid of it.

I was able to plant my first round of cold-tolerant veggie seeds during the first week of April as well. We’ve had a ton of rainy days since then so it’s been extremely easy in terms of upkeep. Up first on the docket were peas, carrots, spinach, lettuce, onions, and sweet peas. I collected the sweet pea seeds from my plants at the end of last year, so we’ll see how well they germinate!

Last up for this early spring update is a quick peek into the winter sowing jugs. You can find out more about what is in these jugs here but, as of early April, there are finally signs of life! These were also extremely easy because I didn’t have to water them once in the last 2 months. Thank you mother nature.
