SEEDS I’M STARTING IN 2022

See below for a list and some notes on the seeds I’ll be starting indoors this winter or will be direct sowing in the spring. I still have plenty left from last year that I’ll be mixing in as well. Spoiler alert: I went big on zinnias this year!

Annuals:

  • Zinnia Zinderella Peach, Lilac, Purple, Orange, and Red. You guys. Someone stop me (no don’t) but these were SUCH a great performer for me in 2021 that I had to go all out in 2022. I think I’m going to do fewer veggies this year in the vegetable garden and dedicate a bed or two to flowers. It should be a chaotic rainbow explosion and I can’t wait.

  • Senora Zinnia

  • Giant Dahlia Flowered Creamy Yellow Zinnia

  • Double Zahara Raspberry Ripple Zinnia. These are a lower growing (16-20”) zinnia that I’d like to incorporate into the landscape beds as my main annual. The deer leave them alone so how can I not?

  • Camelot Cream Digitalis (Foxglove)

  • Frizzle Sizzle Yellow-Blue Swirl Viola - for some early spring blooms or I’ll sow in summer for fall blooms.

  • Cherry Caramel Phlox

  • Xsenia Cosmos - I was able to collect seeds at the end of the season from my 2021 cosmos, but I love having more on hand to pop into the veggie garden after harvesting early vegetables.

Vegetables

  • American Dream Corn

  • Sunangel Spinach

  • Dragoon Lettuce - this and the spinach are cool-season crops so I can direct sow them earlier than most other vegetables

All of these are from Johnny’s Seed or Park Seed.

Zinnia Zinderella Peach provided constant blooms from July - October. This cluster is only 4 plants/seeds! You can see that they actually provide a variety of bloom shapes as well - some are flat and daisy-like, and some are full and rounded.

They were nearly 5ft tall by September. You’ll see a support towards the base of them but I’m pretty sure that was completely unnecessary. They were very sturdy-stemmed.
